After 57 years as a Catholic school teacher, Sister of Notre Dame Irene Gerdeman has retired from full-time teaching.

Following 38 years of teaching in the Diocese of Toledo, Ohio, Sister Irene joined St. Francis Academy in Gainesville in 2007, where she taught math and science for the past 19 years.

Known for her hands-on chemistry and physics demonstrations, she challenged students to excel both academically and personally.

“When you challenge students and create a classroom environment where they feel held accountable, they really learn what it means to be a good student and a good person,” she said. “That was my goal for every student I had.”

Sister Irene said one of the greatest joys of teaching has been reconnecting with former students and hearing how they have grown in their careers, families and faith. She plans to return to Ohio this summer, where she hopes to continue serving as a part-time tutor.
