During the first two weeks of Lent, Bishop Erik Pohlmeier celebrated four rites of election at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, marking an important step for 1,263 people preparing to enter the Catholic Church.

The Rite of Election is an ancient tradition in which the bishop formally recognizes catechumens and candidates who have been preparing through prayer, study and formation to receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil. During the celebration, sponsors and members of the assembly affirm the readiness of those seeking to enter the Church.

Through a series of questions, the bishop calls them to continue listening to the Word of God, walking in God’s presence, persevering in prayer and embracing the Christian life.

Those preparing to receive the sacraments now enter the final Lenten stage of their journey, known as the period of purification and enlightenment, a time of deeper reflection and spiritual preparation leading to the Easter Vigil.
